Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) is a minimally invasive spine surgery that is done from the front of the body, while the patient is lying face up. This anterior, or front, approach, is sometimes preferred because it does not involve the cutting of any of the major muscles of the back, which can increase recovery time and decrease any postoperative pain.

The surgeon will remove the damaged portion of the disc and will then place a plastic or metal cage implant (or spacer) filled with bone graft into the empty disc space. The removal of the damaged portions of the disc and the bone graft work together to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves and stabilize the spine, which may in turn relieve that referred pain.
